Today I have a very special guest with me, Dr. Diane Hilal Campo. She is the founder of Twenty/Twenty Beauty, a new line of beauty products that have been very helpful to my dry eye patients. The reason my patients have had so much success with her products is because they avoid all of the most common toxic ingredients. If you would like to see a list of common toxic ingredients, download it here.
I am so pleased to have Dr. Campo to help explain her views of clean makeup and how her products are solving problems for dry eye patients who haven't been able to wear makeup, maybe for years now.
Clean beauty means that the products that you're using for your beauty routine do not contain anything that can harm your body. The beauty industry is not well-regulated. In the United States, we only have 11 ingredients that are outlawed from use in our beauty ingredients. In other countries, like the EU and Canada, over 1300 chemicals are banned. The U.S. needs more regulation.
A lot of the ingredients that are allowed are things that are toxic. For instance, antifreeze is allowed as an ingredient in makeup and personal care products. Other ingredients include industrial chemicals that are used to make plastics or tires. And, these same chemicals make it onto the list of ingredients in our favorite beauty products.
Most consumers aren't even aware of the harmful effects they have on our eyes, skin, and bodies. Download a list of common toxic ingredients here. Then, you can check out the ingredient list of your favorite products to see if there are any toxins hidden there.
Many of the ingredients that are in our cosmetics are really toxic to our eyes. And, we're putting them directly onto our eyelids first thing in the morning. Then, we're wearing them on our eyes all day long. Sometimes, we even re-apply our makeup mid-day. Wow. The number and concentration of those toxins can add up day after day, and year after year.
And, some of the makeup is falling off the lids and actually getting into our eyes.
Manufacturers want to sell their makeup brands. Just like food companies who label gummy bears as fat-free to get you to eat them. Even though the gummy bears don't contain fat, the extra calories you intake by eating them can turn into fat. The label is not wrong. It's just misleading.
In makeup, buzzwords like organic or paraben-free are commonly used. You can have organic ingredients and still use a toxic preservative. It negates the use of the cleaner ingredients in the end. Or, a product could be paraben-free and still have other forms of toxic preservatives. Parabens prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in your beauty products.
These preservatives are necessary to prolong the shelf life of the product. The manufacturer may avoid using parabens but still use a preservative like formaldehyde that is just as harmful.
Dr. Campo feels that the most important part of having a clean line of beauty products is being transparent. A lot of makeup companies, hide some of these toxic ingredients in words like fragrance.
However, in the Twenty/Twenty Beauty products all of the ingredients are listed. The brand is founded on transparency of ingredients and empowering consumers to understand what it is they are putting on their lids and lashes.
All of the Twenty/Twenty Beauty ingredients are non-toxic and printed on an ingredient list on the box. There also isn't any fragrance in the Twenty/Twenty Beauty products. There's nothing hidden.
Thank you to Dr. Diane Hilal Campo for joining sharing her wisdom on Clean Beauty. Dr. Campo is the genius behind a new line of beauty products that are made from CLEAN ingredients and are safe for your eyes.
Dr. Campo avoids using toxic ingredients in her products even though they are not banned from use here in the United States.
