New Year's Eve is such a fun holiday, and many of us look forward to getting dressed up to go out. Hopefully, this year, even if it is just in your own living room or at your neighbor's house, you have found a way to celebrate.
The makeup that you put around our eyes matters. You can look great and take care of your eyes so that at the end of the night, your makeup is not streaming down your face. No one wants to have red and irritated eyes during the party and especially not the next day either.
I've got 3 great tips to make your holiday makeup look great. And, it will be healthy for your eyes as well.
Do not use waterproof mascara. A lot of my patients with dry eyes switch to waterproof mascara so that it doesn't run down their cheeks when their eyes water. But the waxes and chemicals in the mascara that help it stick to your lashes are very harsh on them in the long run. These ingredients dry out the lashes and clog up the hair follicles and oil glands around them. When your lashes are dry, they are brittle and break easily. No one wants short lashes.
Since you now need a new mascara, try my favorite. Eyes Are The Story launched their new mascara in the Spring of 2020. There was one good thing that happened to us this year. I love this mascara because it looks great, stays on all day, and it's healthy for my eyes. Check it out here.
The most important thing to know about eyeliner is that you want to put it above your upper eyelashes or below the lower lashes. You should never put it on the inner rim of the eyelids. This is the area where the meibomian glands live. Never tight-line or waterline regardless of whatever the biggest makeup trend is of the season.
The meibomian glands are the glands of the eye that produce oils that coat the tears and keep your eyes comfortable. If these glands are covered in eyeliner you will either not have any oil coating your tears, or you will have a bunch of eyeliner floating in your tears. Either way, it's a recipe for an uncomfortable experience.

There are a couple of things to avoid when using eye shadow. First, it would be best to use an eyeshadow pencil or a cream-based eyeshadow. These will stick to your lids better and not flake into the eyes when you blink.
If you are using a powder-based eyeshadow, use a primer before applying the shadow. I use this concealer pen from Beautycounter. I also use it under the eyes to conceal those darker circles or little bags.
When I wear eye shadow, I put it on my upper eyelid as well. The concealer acts as a base to give the shadow something to hold onto. And, it prevents the shadow from falling into your eyes all day.
Finally, steer clear of any eyeshadow that has glitter in it. I know it's tempting to use glitter for a New Years' party, but I recommend you don't put glitter anywhere near your eyes. When the glitter falls into your eyes it can create these tiny microscopic scratches on the front surface of your eye. Your eyes will be red and irritated from it.
Don't worry, there are still plenty of other ways to incorporate festive New Years' glitter in your dress, shoes, and accessories!
Eye makeup is fun to wear whether it is New Year's Eve or any other day of the year. Following a few rules can keep your makeup in place so that your eyes look beautiful.
