The spring season is also bringing us longer days. Longer days mean more exposure to UV light. And, as you know, UV light can be harmful to our eyes. It can lead to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration. Protecting our eyes and our skin from these harmful rays is very important.
Acuvue Oasys just launched a new line of contact lenses with Transitions technology. The transition technology means that the contact lens darkens when UV light hits them. We were one of the first offices in Shreveport to be able to try the lenses for ourselves and our patients. Acuvue Oasys with Transitions lenses contain the light changing technology you have in your favorite transition glasses but now in a contact lens.
These lenses are fabulous for several reasons. The new transitions technology is placed in one of my all-time favorite contact lenses. The Acuvue Oasys contact lenses contain a lot of moisture and are highly wettable. These attributes make the lens great for dry eyes sufferers who still want to wear contact lenses.
The lenses continue to be a two-week disposable contact lens. The two-week replacement schedule keeps the lenses cleaner because you are replacing them before too many protein deposits build up on the front surface of the lens.
I recommend these lenses for daily wear only. Do not sleep in these contact lenses. As you know, I never recommend overnight wear in any contact lens. The risks of infection in patients wearing their lenses to sleep too high. And, this risk is heightened if you are already experiencing dry eye symptoms.
These lenses are all already receiving high acclaim. The Acuvue Oasys with Transitions lens was one of the Time Magazine Best Inventions for 2018. They not only filter bright outdoor light but also indoor blue light coming from your computer screens and digital devices. They provide the highest UV protection currently available in a contact lens. These lenses not only help you by reducing harmful rays during the day, but they also reduce halos and starburst from your vision at night. Studies have shown that while wearing the lenses, your vision will recover from bright light five seconds faster than your naked eye alone.
These contact lenses will be making big news this year as more offices across the country will be able to sample them to their patients. The original Acuvue Oasys lens had UV protection. Now, the transition aspect will provide more comfort to the wearer on bright days. You can watch these lenses in action in my video here.
