Digital Eye Strain. Are you Ready to Unplug?

Mar 20, 2020

The national day of unplugging was Friday, March 6.  This was a time for us to take a break from our electronic devices.  In this case, I'm referring to cell phones, tablets, computers, televisions, and anything else that has a screen.

Most of us can’t get away from using these electronic devices.  They are so much a part of our modern life that they are integrated into our jobs and even our social lives.  At work, most of us are even practicing with electronic health records.  These records make it so much easier to read other doctors' handwriting and find exactly what you’re looking for without searching through the office.

Why Do We Need to Unplug?

So if electronic devices are so helpful, and they are making our lives easier, what is everybody complaining about? Why do we need...

The Best Contact Lenses for Dry Eyes

Mar 02, 2020

I am often asked whether or not a patient's eyes are too dry for contact lens wear.  Sometimes the answer is yes, but this is rarer than you might think.

There have been so many advancements in contact lens technology in the past decade that lenses have become more and more comfortable.  And, more powers of prescriptions are available in contact lens form.  Often, I can fit most patients (even those with dry eyes) in a contact lens for part-time wear.

Contact lenses offer a great way to correct vision.  In some cases, people see better with their contact lenses than they do their glasses.  This is often the case in people with high prescriptions.  Glasses will often restrict a patient's peripheral vision when the lenses are very thick or have a lot of astigmatism.

Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) in the Eyes

Feb 26, 2020

Platelet Rish Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma (also known as PRP) is a therapy that has been used in different aspects of medicine for over 20 years.  The use of PRP is gaining popularity because the platelets release enzymes to promote healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells and growth factors to repair damaged tissue and cause regeneration and rejuvenation.

To harvest the plasma, a sample of your own blood is spun-down and separated to collect a high concentration of growth factors. These factors accelerate healing due to rapidly duplicating cells, as well as, other healing factors migrating to the area of damaged tissue. In addition to quick healing, scarring is also minimized.

PRP is used extensively in orthopedics, dentistry, and cosmetic surgery.  In these cas...

The current outbreak of illness is also known as 2019-nCoV.  Coronaviruses, in general, are a large family of viruses that are common in different species of animals such as bats, camels, cows, and cats.  It is rare, but these animal coronaviruses can infect people.  This was also true of the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which had an outbreak in 2003.

Does your Makeup Love You?

Feb 08, 2020
You love makeup, but does your make up love you?  Have you worn the same brand of makeup for years?  Being creatures of habit, we often go to the same products over and over again.  But, have you noticed that those same products are starting to irritate your eyes?  It may be because the ingredient list or the amounts of the ingredients have changed over the years.

3 Ingredients to Avoid

Let's review three common ingredients to avoid so you can love wearing eye makeup again.  Eliminating these ingredients from your eye makeup and skin or beauty products will help you achieve whiter, brighter eyes.  The 3 we will highlight today are alcohol, formaldehyde, and parabens.

Alcohol

Alcohol is commonly found in eye makeup removers and eye makeup remover wipes.  It may also be found...

3 Tips for Date-Night Worthy Eyes

Jan 31, 2020

Valentine's Day is just around the corner.  Whether you are a fan of this holiday or not, chances are that you are going to be going out in some capacity or another.

I'd like to show you a few tips on how to make your eyes look bold and beautiful.  The thing about your eyes is: THEY ARE THE WINDOW TO YOUR SOUL.

We all know this.  Big, bright eyes are a sign of beauty.

Unfortunately, in our society right now, the trend in beauty is to cover up your lids with lots of black eyeliner as close to the eye itself as possible and glue on long, long false lashes.  These two trends are detrimental to the overall health of your eyes in the long run.

For the past two weeks, we have talked about self-care routines to help you take the best care of your eyes.  I advocate for doing a routine tw...

The Truth about Blue Light and your Sleep

Jan 26, 2020

Do you have a case of the winter blues?  The winter blues may make it hard for you to get out of bed in the morning.  You may feel sluggish throughout the day or find yourself yawning when you know you have gotten a full 8 hours of sleep.

A few years ago, I lived in Syracuse New York. Being a native Houstonian who then moved to Los Angeles, winter was not in my vocabulary.  This is a true story. I need to preface this because I’m sure some of you will not believe it.

One morning, I went out to get into my car for work. The windshield had completely iced over. Well, in Los Angeles, when this happens we just get the water hose out and run it over the windshield while using the wipers back-and-forth. The windshield clears in just a few seconds.

This particular morning, I didn’t h...

The Bedtime Routine to Alleviate Dry Eye Symptoms

Jan 21, 2020

Setting up a bedtime routine is important not only for school-age children but for us adults as well.  A routine lets your body know that you are winding down, and it will help you to fall asleep faster.

I go into all of the steps to ensure a good night's sleep in my book, Alleviate Dry Eye, in Chapter 4.  If you haven't gotten your copy yet, you can get it on Amazon.  Or, if you would just like to read the chapter on sleep, please download a free copy of this chapter here.

Just like we talked about last week with the morning routine, I feel the best way to develop an eye care routine that will become a habit is to couple with your already established bedtime routine.  It's a process called habit stacking.  You brush your teeth, then you use the mouth wash.  It gets to the point wh...

Morning Routine

Jan 13, 2020
Do you have a morning routine?  In my last blog, I talked about a few steps I take to get myself mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared for the day.  But, I also have a few steps that I ask myself and my patients do to prepare their eyes for the day.

This fall, both of my children were in what we now call, “big girl school“.  No more school bus for one and Mother's Day Out for the other.  We all walk out the door together, and we are dressed and ready to take on the day.

So this year, I have been doing a lot of thinking about morning routines. How do my kids not know that they’re supposed to put their shoes on before we walk out the door?  It was trying at first, but we are getting the hang of it all now.

To make things go smoothly, I have even gone so far as to write ...

Happy New Year - Setting Intentions

Jan 12, 2020
Happy new year so glad to have you with me as we journey through the year.  As an eye doctor, I am thrilled to be in the year 2020.  Maybe have not heard this before, but many of the doctors considered dry eye disease to be a vision disorder.  One of the hallmark signs of dry eyes is fluctuating or blurred vision.  To me, this year of 2020, is a great year to spread the word on alleviating dry eye symptoms and causes from your life.

This past weekend, I was on a retreat with one of my closest to gal pals and dry eye expert, Dr. Jennifer Planitz.  We spent the weekend talking about our goals for this epic year.  It prompted me to decide to share with you some of the ways I set intentions for both my day and my year.  I am hoping you will set one intention to care for your eyes in 2020.
