Got Tired Eyes? 3 Common Reasons for Tired Eyes

Mar 02, 2021

One of the most common complaints I get from my patients that I either see in the office or online in a telehealth visit is, "Why are my eyes so tired?"  And then, the patient usually elaborates with something like this, "I don't know what they're doing, they're just tired. I wake up, and they're tired. I drink my coffee, and they're tired. Why am I so tired all the time?"  Today, I will review three reasons why your eyes are tired.

#1) Your Eyes are Dry

Most Americans are using digital devices constantly.  Whether it's computers, phones, tablets, or even watches.  You are using these electronics for up to eight hours a day. Sometimes you may even use two at a time. You're on the computer and you're on your cellphone all at the same time.  You can't escape...

What does Clean Makeup Mean?

Feb 09, 2021

Most of my patients ask me lots of questions about how to make their eyes look younger.  How can we turn back the clocks and make ourselves look years younger?  Well, if I knew how to do that, I would be lounging on a private island by now.  I don't have a magic wand to wave to erase the effects all those years have had on our bodies.

But, I do know that using Clean Makeup will help decrease the signs of aging around your eyes.  Now I've caught your attention.  It's true, using the average makeup found at the drug store or at the department store counter is filled with toxic ingredients that will increase inflammation of your tissues and increase the signs of aging.

What is CLEAN Makeup?

Clean makeup is defined as beauty products that are made without...

Do Your Eyes Feel More Dry in the Mornings?

Feb 02, 2021

It is said that dry eye has as many symptoms as it has causes.  One person's dry eyes may feel completely different than the next person's dry eyes.  Some patients complain that they are dry and scratchy and the next complains that they are irritated and watery.

Some of my patients feel their dry eyes feel worst and night and some feel worse in the mornings.  When you have eye irritation first thing in the morning, there are usually a few key reasons.

One of the first questions I like to ask my dry eye patients is, "Do your eyes feel more tired and irritated first thing in the morning or at the end of the day?"  The reason that I like to ask this question is that I want to get to the root cause of the dry eye symptoms.

Knowing when the eyes are most dry tells...

Glaucoma and Dry Eye: What's the Relationship?

Jan 26, 2021

 January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

I want to take some time to discuss how glaucoma and dry eye are related.  You probably already know what dry eye is. You know that it's an irritation of the front surface of the eye that can cause your eyes to be red, gritty, and irritated.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is often referred to as the "silent thief of vision".  It is a disease that causes you to lose your peripheral vision.   It generally happens very slowly over a long period of time,  This loss of vision is caused by an increase in the pressure inside the eye.  The increase in pressure is usually not enough to cause pain.

There are very few symptoms that indicate to a patient that they are suffering from glaucoma.  It can go on for years...

Guide to Lid and Lash Cleansers

Jan 12, 2021

Eyelid and lash cleansers are important to use on a daily basis to remove excessive amounts of bacteria.  We all have bacteria that are normal to live on our lids and lashes.  Cleaning your eyelids and lashes is part of the four-step daily practice I recommend to all of my dry eye patients.  If you're not sure what I'm referring to, check out this blog here.

The bacteria can become overpopulated on the lids and lashes from many factors like not removing all of our makeup at the end of the day, a change in hormones (pregnancy, birth control, menopause), or even a change in the season of the year.

Using a lid cleanser on a regular basis will keep the bacteria levels down to their normal amounts.  This helps to keep the eyelids feeling comfortable and keep...
